Santander is the capital of the Spanish Autonomous Region of Cantabria. In 1941 a large part of the old city was destroyed by fire, but despite the loss of many historic buildings the city has much to offer the visitor, especially in summer. Its many beaches are extremely beautiful and are washed by the refreshing waters of the Bay of Biscay. Santander has also been a favourite haunt of the Spanish jet set since the 19th century with its emblematic El Sardinero Beach being the principal meeting point.
The harbour and the modern suburbs are not as interesting, but what is left of the historic district is still fun to visit.
There is a ferry service linking Santander with Plymouth in England.
The main attractions or tourist destinations in Santander are: • The Plaza de Cañadio, the focal point of the city’s nightlife • The shops in and around Cuatro Caminos • The beaches of "El Sardinero" • The city’s casino
