On October 7, 2011 we started renovating the old farmhouse. The first thing we had to do was open up the entire first and second floors, which we completely gutted. The original layout of the house consisted of a veritable rabbit warren of small spaces.
After demolishing the many partition walls, all the plaster was chipped off the inside of the outer walls to reveal the beautiful warm, honey-coloured stonework.
The next phase involved removing the old floor boards and the roof, which had borne the brunt of the weather for centuries. Steel beams were then inserted to form the new floors.
Next, the outer walls were raised to increase the overall height of the building. Many new materials were used in the rebuilding of the house to provide a solid, new foundation, but wherever possible the original materials were reused, such as the ancient stones and wooden beams above the windows of the house.
In July 2013 the renovation will finally be over and we shall be able to open the doors of Casa La Sonrisa and welcome our first guests.
